Cougars used to be common across most of North and South America. No other mammal on the American continent had a comparable range of distribution. It ranged from southern Canada through Central America to southern Patagonia. Today, the population is very thin and reduced to areas that are sparsely populated. In the United States, Cougars survived the eradication waves only in the Rocky Mountains, Cascade Range, Coast Mountains, in the deserts and semi-deserts of the southwest, and in the Everglades Marshes of Florida. The distribution area has expanded again due to protective measures, meanwhile there are also Cougars in the Great Lakes area. In some regions of the American West, cougars are no longer afraid of being close to cities. The Cougar has been shown to reappear in the Canadian province of Québec in 2007, although it has been extinct there since 1938.
