The Mer de Glace is a valley glacier located on the northern slopes of the Mont Blanc massif, in the French Alps, is the largest glacier in France. Due to global warming the glacier is rapidly shrinking. Hundreds of steps lead down to the ice cave/grotto. The grotto has to be dug out every summer since the glacier moves about 70m every year.
