Betty Friedan a writer and activist was a central figure, designated an 'honored guest,' at a large rally in Grant Park, Chicago, attended by scores of thousands to urge passage of the Equal Rights Amendment; May 10, 1980. Friedan was one of the leaders of the feminist movement and her book, `The Feminist Mystique,` was a signal consciousness-raising work of this period. Friedan died in Washington, DC on her 85th birthday, February 4, 2006.
