Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes. It lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and is in the Albertine Rift, a part of the Great Rift Valley. Commercial traffic along the lake Kivu is important both for Rwanda rural people and D.R. of the Congo rural people. Rwanda is a country of few natural resources, and the economy is based mostly on subsistence agriculture by local farmers using simple tools. Despite Rwanda's fertile ecosystem, food production often does not keep pace with population growth, and food imports are required.
