A well in Central Russia. A well is a hydraulic structure for extracting ground water, usually consisting of a vertical recess with reinforced walls and a mechanism for lifting water to the surface a bucket on a rope, a crane pole, chains, or a pump. A well differs from a well in that it is much wider than it is, since it is usually dug manually. The upper part of the well is covered with a special superstructure in the form of a roof, where a drum is mounted for lifting a bucket of water.
