Forlì, Piazza Saffi with the Abbey of San Mercuriale, the very symbol of the city. #197005176
Description

The Abbey of San Mercuriale of Romanesque architecture, in brick, built on the first place of Christian worship in Forlì; the bell tower is famous for being one of the highest in Italy, in Romanesque style: the same photo on the side already gives an idea of the height of this bell tower, which, in the 13th century, was described as one of the wonders of the Kingdom of Italy. The cloister was open to public passage during the Twenties, when architects and urban planners of the fascist regime redesigned large parts of the city and the square itself. Particular is the lunette on the portal: a work of 1230 which describes, in two scenes, the sleep of the Magi and their adoration of the child Jesus. This work can be considered the first fully sculpted nativity scene in the history of world art.
