Description
Looking down from the Clifton Observatory to a view of the Clifton Suspension bridge. This is a grade 1 listed structure. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Brunel was 24 when he won the completion to design a bridge across the Avon gorge.. It took 33 years to complete and started his great engineering career. Williams Henry Barlow and John Hawkehaw later made some alterations to Brunel original design. He never saw it finished. It is 412 metres long and is 75 metres above the river. The towers are mad of Sandstone and the bridge deck is suspended by 162 vertical wrought iron rode in 81 matching pairs.
