Actor, tv director and writer Hal Holbrook is the winner of 5 Primetime Emmys. He was a young man in the 1950s when he donned the period costume and considerable makeup to appear as Samuel Clemons in his 1-man show, `Mark Twain Tonight.` He has taken the production throughout America for decades and won a Tony in 1967. At that time he probably never thought he would outlive his subject by over 20 years. Holbrook was happy to sign autographs after his performance as Twain at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in 1977, before its Broadway run in New York. The Oscar-nominated actor was awarded the National Humanities medal in 2003. Holbrook died at his home in Beverly Hills, California on January 23, 2021 at the age of 95.
