Description

A small Waterbird or Duck, about the size of a turtle dove. Smaller than any other duck. Found in inland waters. They have no tail and short rounded wings. Lobbed toes to enable them to swim.In breeding season they are more colorful, distinct with reddish brown sides of the neck and a light patch at the base of the beak. Non breeding birds are lighter of color not white on the underbelly, with dark cheeks and throat. The little chicks are striped.They hardly ever leave the water so this capture is very rare. However sometimes they do fly at night to check out new territory. They constantly dive for food and like to flatter-run over the water to chase intruders. Very vigilant little ducks. Sometimes gregarious loves company They make a shrill, drawn-out chirp sound. Usually found in Woodlands, Savanna and towns.
