Photograph of the square in the old town of Catania in Sicily during the gathering of Saint Agatha #199380613
Description
It is the largest gathering around a Catholic holiday in Europe. This large religious procession with 11 golden candelabras takes place in the old town of Catania, followed by masses in the cathedral. A tribute to a saint with a cruel fate who had a breast cut off by a Roman general, because she had rejected his advances. Martyred by the city, she also gave her name to Cassatella di sant& x27;Agata & x28;or & x22;la teta di Santa Agatha& x22;& x29;, a typical Catanian dessert with a suggestive breast shape, made of ricotta and chocolate. During Saint Agatha, the people carrying the saint& x27;s relics and crossing the city are her penitents who have come to repent. Space is limited, so there is often heated discussion about who will wear the relic. At the time, we observed the great names of mafia families & x28;very believers& x29; who came to raise the religious emblems of the city. Do not miss the ascent of Via Sangiuliano where penitents race up this famous inclined street. Many activities and festivities.
