Description
Longtime U.S. Congressman Claude Pepper from Florida is greeted by Frank Atlas to address an audience of senior citizens in Chicago, Illinois in 1984. Pepper, a liberal Democrat, was especially strong on labor and welfare issues and was a venerated hero of the elderly, having authored significant legislation on their behalf. He died on May 30, 1989 at the age of 88. Atlas was Director of the Southeast region of the City`s Department on Aging and Disability. Atlas died at age 51, a few months after this photo was taken, and the multi-purpose center pictured here, which he also directed, was renamed in his honor.
