Description

The Spanish Steps are the grandiose Baroque staircase in Rome. Consists of 135 steps that lead from the Spanish Square to the Trinita dei Monti church located at the top of the Pincio hill. The patrons of the Trinit dei Monti church were the kings of France, and on the Spanish square there was a representation of their close relatives, the kings of Spain. French diplomat Etienne Gueffier considered that it was necessary to connect these two points with a ladder, and in his will left 20 thousand scanty for the implementation of this colossal project. Hearing about the will of Gueffier, Cardinal Mazarin intervened in the matter, who demanded that an equestrian statue of King Louis XIV be erected at the top of the stairs.
