Description
Peafowl is a common name for three bird species in the genera pavo and afropavo of the family phasianidae, the pheasants and their allies. Male peafowl are referred to as peacocks, and female peafowl as peahens, though peafowl of either sex are often referred to colloquially as "peacocks". Peacocks are best known for their amazing eye-spotted tail feathers or plumage. During a display ceremony the peacock will stand its tail feathers up to form a fan that stretches out nearly 2 m in length. The Indian peacock, pavo cristatus linnaeus, is the national bird of India.
