Hamer man near Turmi, Ethiopia #20051337
Afternoon in a Hamer village near Turmi, Omo valley in Southern Ethiopia. An old man rests sitting on a small wooden chair/pillow. Young men and women have not returned from the fields yet and the village is empty, except few old people who take care about the household. The Hamer are one of the biggest tribe in the southern Ethiopia (about 50,000) and they are agropastorialis, cultivating sorghum, vegetables, millet, tobacco, and cotton, rearing cattle and goats, collecting wild honey. An interesting piece of their everyday equipment is a wooden chair which is used either for sitting (in the picture) or for slipping to support a head (a pillow). Man go everywhere with their chairs which are sometimes nicely decorated.
