Description
The jaboticaba or jaboticaba is the fruit of the jaboticaba tree or jaboticaba tree, a Brazilian fruit tree of the mirtaceae family, native to the Atlantic Forest. With the recent change in the botanical nomenclature, there are disagreements about the classification of the species: Myrciaria cauliflora O.Berg 1854, Plinia trunciflora Kausel 1956 or Plinia cauliflora Kausel 1956. Related species in the genus Myrciaria, often referred to by the same common names, are native to America from the South, found in countries like Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. According to Lorenzi et al., Plinia trunciflora would be another species, the jabuticaba-café. The city of Jaboticabal, in São Paulo, was named after this plant. Initially described in 1828 from cultivated material, its origin is unknown. Other popular names: jabuticabeira-preto, jabuticabeira-rajada, jabuticabeira-rosea, jabuticabeira-red-white, jabuticaba-paulista, jabuticaba-ponhema, jabuticaba-açu.
