Saint George island in Montenegro #202355058
Description
This island of the Bay of Kotor, as well as the island of the virgin, is located near the city of Perast, actually opposite it, but unlike its neighbor, it has a natural (volcanic) origin. But like the island of the virgin, it is just as small some three square kilometers with a little, all the same 100 meters long and 30 meters wide. St. George's island was originally favored by Catholics, who settled here in the XII century, first building a Church, and then a full-fledged, fortified as a fortress, Abbey. The first mention of the Benedictine Abbey dates back to 1166, but historians and archaeologists also mention a much earlier date for the existence of a Christian Church on the island, almost in the VIII-IX centuries.
