Description
The historic centre of San Gimignano has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. San Gimignano still owns some of the medieval gender towers, which were preserved in other cities only as stumps. In the Middle Ages, the patrician families tried to surpass themselves at the height of their gender tower, although a luxurious life in them was not possible. Of the 72 gender towers, 15 still exist in San Gimignano. The two highest, the Torre Grossa from 1311 and the Torre della Rognosa, have a height of 54 and 51 metres respectively. The cistern in Piazza della Cisterna was built in 1287 and was extended in 1346 by the podium Guccio Malavolti.
