Description
Founded shortly after 528 by refugees fleeing the Lombard invasion, it was the capital for eleven centuries, from 697-1797, of the Republic of Venice. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the city was a great maritime power, at the origin of the Fourth Crusade and victorious during the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 against the Ottoman Empire.
