Marshmallow is one of the oldest medicinal plants and it is 1-2 m high. The whole plant is overgrown with thick silky hairs so that the leaves are silvery-white and soft like velvet. It likes light deep moist soil and most of all river sediment which is occasionally flooded. The tree is upright simple or branched and woody at the bottom. The leaves are spirally arranged and from their axils at the top of the stem and branches inflorescences of white-pink 1-2 cm large flowers emerge. It blooms throughout the summer.
