Description
Harmsworth`s Universal Encyclopaedia 1920s - Social History. The musical instrument the Harp through the eras. Bow shaped instruments used in Ancient Egypt, modern form of orchestra harp and the Phrygian trigon. The harp is a stringed musical instrument that has a number of individual strings running at an angle to its soundboard; the strings are plucked with the fingers. Harps were very popular in ancient Assyria and Mesopotamia. One of the earliest illustrations of a harp was on a vase found in a Babylonian temple. These harps were angled harps with 12 to 15 strings and similar to the bowed instruments played in Egypt about the same time.
