Description
Situated about 30 kms. north of the city of Mangalore, on the west coast of Karnataka State, this Hindu Temple is built on the banks of River Shambhavi, in Bappanadu village. It has a history of over 800 years. The meaning of Bappanadu is `Bappa`s Village`. It is believed that Bappa Beary, a Muslim merchant is responsible for the construction of Goddess Durga Parameshwari Temple here. Since then, the Goddess is worshipped by people of all faiths and the Temple has been regarded as a symbol of communal harmony. This Temple is one of the important seats of Shakti worship and the main deity is in the form of Linga symbolic statue. The Temple Tower, or Gopuram, has some exquisite carvings of Gods and Goddesses.
