She was also an activist to save endangered elephants in Africa. A fresh-faced beauty, in 1959 she represented her home state of Nevada in the Miss America beauty contest in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Wells died in Los Angeles on December 30, 2020, from Covid-19 complications, at the age of 82.
