Emperor penguins line up to walk in fact out of the need to keep warm. When they are quiet they curl up together and form a dense group in harmony thus minimizing heat loss. Every 30 or 60 seconds some emperor penguins move slightly prompting their partners to start moving and soon the whole group forms waves that seem to move slowly.
