Description
The Stadium at Aphrodisias Ancient City archaeological site in Aydñn Province, Turkey. The stadium was used for athletic events until the theatre was badly damaged by a 7th-century earthquake, requiring part of the stadium to be converted for events previously staged in the theatre.The stadium measures approximately 270m by 60m. With 30 rows of seats on each side, and around each end, it would have had a maximum capacity for around 30,000 spectators.The temple of Aphrodite dates from the 3rd century BC and the city was built one century later. The wealth of Aphrodisias came from the marble quarries and the art produced by its sculptors. The city streets are arranged around several large civic structures, which include temples, a theatre, an agora and two bath complexes.
