Legendary call-in tv and radio talk show host Larry King, known on tv for his trademark red suspenders, arrives on the red carpet for the Friars Foundation Gala at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City on October 7. 2014. He is accompanied by his wife Shawn Southwick King. They were married from 1997 until 2019. The Friars event honored actor Robert DeNiro and business tycoon and philanthropist Carlos Slim. King hosted the event. King, who began his radio broadcasting career in the late 1950s, started hosting an all-night call-in show in 1978, broadcast nationally by the Mutual network. In 1985 he made a smooth transition to cable tv with`Larry King Live' on CNN which lasted until 2010 and was the station`s highest rated program. Along the way he garnered an Emmy a Peabody Award and 10 Cable Ace Awards. He had hundreds of prominent guests over the years, particularly from the worlds of entertainment, politics, and sports. His style was relaxed and involved patient listening. He went into interviews without much, if any, preparation. Although he was occasionally ridiculed for this approach as being lazy, he argued that it made for spontaneous, lively discussion, and from the `everyman` point-of-view. King collected 7 wives and had 8 marriages and 8 divorces. In his later years, he had serious health issues and contracted the Coronavirus in late December 2020. He died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on January 23,
