Description

The Amsterdam was built in 1748 at the VOC shipyard in Amsterdam and was launched there around the turn of the year. After loading and embarking on the roadstead of the island of Texel it sailed on January 8 1749 for its first voyage to the East.On board were the usual number of crew members for this type of ship (203 men including 33-year-old captain Willem Klump) a contingent of soldiers (127 men) and also 5 passengers. The cargo consisted of merchandise (textiles and wine) ballast (building blocks and cannons) as well as items for use by the VOC in the East (paper pens tools etc.) and provisions. The cargo also included 27 cases of silver which at the time had a total value of about 300 000 guilders nowadays several millions of euros.
