In the distance seen from the beach the idyllically situated Urk peninsula #208850654
Description
Urk is a former island and current municipality in the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands. With 21 135 inhabitants on an area of approximately 11.54 kmò (and 98.36 kmò of water) Urk is the smallest municipality in this province in terms of area. Until the dike was completed in 1939 Urk was an island in the IJsselmeer the former Zuiderzee (until the completion of the Afsluitdijk in 1932). The Noordoostpolder was drained in 1942 but the island feeling is still alive for the inhabitants of Urk. For example people are not or live in Urk but on Urk. On January 24 2021 when the national curfew between 9pm and 5 am went into effect the Urk youth showed a violent streak. A so-called Corona test street was set on fire and used forcibly and fireworks bombs thrown at the police. Several arrests were the result.
