Title
The Eierland lighthouse is located on the northernmost tip of the island of Texel. #209010768
Description
Six of the eight floors can be climbed daily from March to November and during holidays. In winter the tower is open on Wednesdays and weekends. The bright red tower is particularly photogenic and is therefore frequently featured in photos of Texel. In the Eierlandse Gat off the coast of Texel many ships have been wrecked over the centuries. While at the beginning of the nineteenth century there were lighthouses on the next Wadden island of Terschelling and in Den Helder Texel only had a wooden beacon. This was clearly insufficient between 1848 and 1860 no fewer than 72 ships were wrecked off the Texel coast.
