By 1970 the building had fallen into such disrepair that demolition was imminent. The population of The Hague strongly protested against this after which it was decided to restoration and renovation in 1972. The renovation did mean that the two wings of the complex had to be completely demolished and then rebuilt. In 1974 it was given monument status.
