The Beurs van Berlage. A national monument, located on the Damrak. #209713957
Description
In designing the Stock Exchange, the architect Berlage applied the principle that form and ornament closely match the construction, unity in diversity. This was also a political position. The enormous brick walls that can be found in the stock exchange, in his eyes, depicted a democratic society: `as an individual void, as a mass a power.` the northern Italian city of Brescia. In any case, Romanesque and Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy formed an important inspiration for Berlages Beurs, see for example the Basilica of Saint Ambrose in Milan.
