Harmsworth`s Universal Encyclopedia 1940s.Caithness: The most northerly county of Britain, noted for its herring and cod fisheries. In the extreme N.E. is the famous John O` Groat`s house. Caithness is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area of Scotland. Caithness has a land boundary with the historic county of Sutherland to the west and is otherwise bounded by sea. The land boundary follows a watershed and is crossed by two roads and by one railway.
