Vertical image of a Sugar Maple tree`s bark. On young trees, the bark is smooth and gray. As the tree ages, the bark begins to peel in long strips often difficult to break off. Sapsucker damage can cause excess sap to to run down bark surface which is colonized by a dark colored fungus that makes the bark look black, as shown on this image.
