Description
The cavernous interior of the Nonnberg Abbey Church in Salzburg, Austria. Founded by Saint Rupert in 712, the Benedictine monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The abbey church has been damaged by fire twice since 1006. As a result it has been rebuilt, remodeled and added on to several times over the centuries. Today it is a mix of Romanesque and Baroque styles. Nonneberg Abbey is also famous as the very place where Maria Augusta von Trapp was a postulant in 1924. The popular musical Sound of Music was based on her life at the Abbey and the complex was also featured in the movie. The real Maria Augusta was married in the abbey church.
