Description
Stone sign at the entrance of the Benedictine Nonnberg Abbey. Founded by Saint Rupert in 712, the Benedictine monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The abbey church has been damaged by fire twice since 1006. As a result it has been rebuilt, remodeled and added on to several times over the centuries. Today it is a mix of Romanesque and Baroque styles. Nonneberg Abbey is also famous as the very place where Maria Augusta von Trapp was a postulant in 1924. The popular musical Sound of Music was based on her life at the Abbey and the complex was also featured in the movie.
