Description
The image :IMG_2553 of the Water Thick Knee / Water Dikkop Burhinus vermiculatuswas captured at the Sable Dam, near the Phalaborwa Gate, Kruger National Park, South Africa. ` The large squarish head and large light eye distinguish it from other plovers. Also by the pale bar covering most of the wing, with wing folded there is a narrow white line above the grey coverts. In flight there is a small black and white patch at tip of wing and a broad grey proximal patch. Distribution: Tropical and Southern Africa. Resident where there are large perennial rivers or lakes with a certain amount of bush, no frost. Squats on the ground, under bushes during the day. Reluctant to fly when disturbed, consequently runs away, head down, before taking to flight. Flies with rapid wing-beat, alternated with slower flapping. Food: Insects, crustacea, molluscs. Voice:Loud harsh whee repeated frequently.
