Description
Nymphaea alba is a freshwater plant belonging to the water lily family Nymphaeaceae. It is commonly known as the white water lily or European white water lily. N. alba has large, round leaves up to 20 cm in diameter that float on the water's surface. It produces solitary white flowers approximately 8-12 cm across with many petals. The flowers emerge from the center of the leaves and only last for about three days. N. alba is native to Europe, Asia, and Africa and grows in slow-moving freshwater habitats like ponds, lakes, and ditches. All parts of the plant were traditionally used as food and medicine.
