Description
Allegheny blackberry with carpenter bee on blossom. Rubus allegheniensis is a species of bramble, known as Allegheny blackberry and simply as common blackberry. Like other blackberries, it is a species of flowering plant in the rose family. It is very common in eastern and central North America. Carpenter bees are species in the genus Xylocopa of the subfamily Xylocopinae. The genus includes some 500 bees in 31 subgenera. The common name `carpenter bee` derives from their nesting behavior; nearly all species burrow into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo.
