Sri Durgiana Temple, or Silver Temple, in Amritsar, Punjab, India #216091099
Description
This Hindu Temple derives its name from Goddess Durga, the chief deity worshipped here. Deities of Lakshmi and Vishnu are also worshipped and hence this Temple is also known as Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The temple is called Silver Temple because of its large exquisitely designed silver doors. The Temple is famous especially among Punjabi Hindus.Although this Hindu Temple dates to the 16th Century, it was rebuilt in in its present form in 1921 by Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor. Following the architectural style of the Sikh Golden Temple, also in Amritsar, the Durgiana Temple was constructed in the middle of a lake, with dome and canopies similar to the Sikh Temple. The dome is gilded and lit by colorful lights. The sacred lake measures 520 ft x 430 ft and the main Temple is approached by a bridge. The Temple is steeped in legend, pertaining to the Ramayana era.
