Description
Birch (Betula L.) - a genus of trees and shrubs belonging to the birch family. It includes a difficult to specify number of species, as interspecific hybrids are easily formed within the genus with taxonomic status difficult to determine. About 30-60 species are usually distinguished. These plants are found in the northern hemisphere. They usually inhabit poor habitats and are often pioneer species. They are grown as ornamental trees mainly for their showy, thin and white bark. They also provide valued wood. They are used as a source of birch sap and are used medicinally.
