Description
The Melk Abbey is in Upper Austria in the Wachau Valley, a famous wine and apricot growing region. It is a working abbey with 40 Benedectine monks present. There are only a total of 1500 nuns and monks living in the German speaking world. They are teachers, educators and parish pastors. There is a secondary school on site with five high school branches The location is halfway between Vienna and Linz, Austria. A Coed School is at the abbey with a total of 700 students. The architecture is Baroque and was designed by the Austrian baroque architect Jakob Prandtauer. The remains of several members of the Austrian first ruling dynasty, the House of Babenberg are present in the Abbey. It overlooks the Danube and is above the town of Melk .
