Upper Belvedere palace in Vienna, Austria is part of a palace complex including the upper and lower Belvedere palaces, an orangery and palace stables as well as a baroque landscape gardene. It was built in early 18th century as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, a brilliant military leader. It is baroque in its architecture and was designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt. The upper belvedere served as a ceremonial palace while the lower belvedere palace was mor of a functional palace. Upon his death in 1736, his niece Victoria inherited the palace but had no interest in in and later sold it in 1752 to Maria Theresa. She moved the imperial picture Gallery there and today it serves as an art museum and its holdings include “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt. It houses the world’s largest collection of his art.
