Belchite ruins #21804551
Description
Belchite is a town in the province of Zaragoza (Spain), located 49 km from the capital. It has a population of 1,692 inhabitants and 273.58 km ò. Is known to have been the scene of one of the symbolic battles of the Spanish Civil War, the Battle of Belchite. As a result of the fighting, the village was completely destroyed. Instead of rebuilding, the regime of Francisco Franco decided to create a new town next door (now known as Belchite Nuevo), leaving intact the ruins of the former as a reminder of the civil war. The ensemble, now abandoned and partially closed to foot traffic, is known as Pueblo Viejo de Belchite.
