Pictured is a bronze statue by sculptor James Wilson Alexander standing in Forest Park in Saint Louis, Missouri. It was unveiled in 1876. Medallions were added at a later date representing other notable people of the time. Bates was a politician who helped draft the first constitution of the new state of Missouri and served as Attorney General from 1861 to 1864 in President Abraham Lincoln`s cabinet.
