Description
The Garabashi glacier is located on the southeastern slope of the highest mountain in Russia and Europe. Its length is 4090 meters, and the area is close to 5 square kilometers. Morena Garabashi feeds the Baksan river basin. Due to global climate change, like all glaciers in the Caucasus, Garabashi is gradually decreasing in size, on average by 5-6 meters per year. A scientific station of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences is organized at an altitude of 3850 meters. Since 1981, observations of the regime of accumulation and melting of snow, ice formation processes, ice movement, heat balance and meteorological processes in the high mountain zone have been carried out here.
