Description
Bodhgaya and the MahaBodhi Temple complex, where Gautama Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment under what became known as the Bodhi Tree, is located about 110 kilometres from Patna, in the state of Bihar in India. It is considered to be the holiest site in Buddhism and the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha. Built in the 2nd century CE, the 4.8-hectare MahaBodhi Temple complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002.
