A lovely walk along the Sheepfold at Heidsesteinon a quiet hot weekday #221005509
Description
Today the area consists of coniferous and mixed forests with heaths, shifting sands and water features. Since 1999, Utrechts Landschap has been actively involved in reconnecting nature on the Heuvelrug under the motto Heel de Heuvelrug. In the winter of 2007, 15 hectares of forest were cleared on Heidestein and Bornia to connect the heathlands of the area. A flock of sheep keeps the area open by eating grass and saplings. Heidestein is an official breeding station for the Drenthe Heath sheep. In the future, a connection will be made between the Kerckebosch heathland and the Heidestein estate via so-called stepping stones of heather.[1] The many tree stumps then make way for heather and bunt grass. The open sandy areas are populated by a population of sand lizards.n
