Description
Pictured is the 1964 Texas State Historical Survey Committee marker for the first Texas artificial gas plant in the City of Jefferson. In front of the marker is a seven foot iron drum with a small neck called a retort. Loaded with pine knots and rich pine wood, a retort was heated forcing gas into mains by use of a pressure drum. Jefferson gas light company chartered in 1870 used these retorts as part of the states first gaslight system, lighting gaslights on streets and houses.
