The Battle of Bennington was fought on August 16, 1777 and together with the Battle of Saratoga, is recognized as a turning point in the American Revolutionary War, as they were the first major defeats of the British Army by the colonists. General Burgoyne never recovered from the loss and eventually surrendered the remainder of his Army later that year. The anniversary of the battle is still celebrated in the state of Vermont as a legal holiday, known as Bennington Battle Day. The Bennington Battle Monument is located in Southern Vermont. The stone obelisk was commissioned in the 1870`s and completed in 1889. The memorial stands 306 feet 93 meters high and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
