The Santuario del Santo Cristo was built on the old church of Almatá, originally the largest mosque of the Saracens, which was destroyed during the years of war between Moors and Christians. It was offered by Count Ermengol IV of Gerb, before Balaguer fell into his power. In 1105, when the city was definitely conquered, it was rebuilt. It was called the church of Santa MarÃÂa de Almatá
