Description
Gyantse town is strategically located in the Nyang Chu valley on the ancient trade routes from the Chumbi Valley, Yatung and Sikkim. It is notable for its Gyantse Dzong or fortress, and its magnificent tiered Kumbum of the Palcho Monastery, the largest chörten stupa in Tibet. During the Cultural Revolution, the fort, the monastery and Kumbum were ransacked. The main building of the monastery and Kumbum have been largely restored but the dzong is still largely in ruins.
